The
Process of the Project

| Identify
the Location of the Dam |
|
| The
area called Sandouping with wide river surface, which is 7 kilometers
far from the Xi Ling Gorges along the downstream of Yangtze
River, was identified in 1959. There is a island called Zhongbao
Island which would be the best location of the dam. |
| The
first phase of the project is from 1993 to Nov.1997 |
|
| The
preparation of the project started in 1993. 14 Dec.1994, the
construction launched. The construction process of this phase
is to build the Embankment A to lock the river and the surround
right bank, then to built the basic construction B and narrow
C in the dry river bed. These constructions were for construction
of the main body of the dam and leading channel later. At this
moment, the ship lock D began the construction. |
| The
second phase of the project is from Nov.1997 to 2003 |
|
| In
this phase, Embankment A and left bank were under construction.
In the dry riverbed, 14 motors were installed in the embankment
of floodway and Main body of Embankment B, which took the motor
groups. The sailing would stop until Nov.2002 on leading channel. |
| The
third phase of the project is from 2003 to 2009 |
|
| The
leading channel would be cut-off. The embankment A would be
build and surround the right bank and water come to the reservoir.
The motor group B on the left side starts to work. The level
five shipclock C comes into use. The main dam body D would be
built in the dry riverbed and 12 motors would be installed in
the group motors. |
| The
deadline of the project is 2009 |

| The
dam is supposed to be 185 meters high. It would be the biggest
dam in the gorges in all over the world and 26 motors would
start working. |
